Bovelander ethical code of conduct

Everyone who works with us as a volunteer, intern or paid staff member signs the Bovelander ethical code of conduct before starting.

Why an ethical code of conduct?

A code of conduct is a formal document that sets guidelines, rules and boundaries for interactions between supervisors and participants. It helps prevent inappropriate behaviour and serves as a standard against which the behaviour of supervisors can be assessed. It also explains how to act when boundaries are crossed. The purpose of this code is to promote the wellbeing and safety of all children and supervisors during a Bovelander event.

Whether someone has broken the law cannot be determined by this code alone. The code does not protect a person from prosecution merely because they followed its wording. Likewise, breaching the code alone does not necessarily make someone legally punishable. Compliance with or violation of this code may, however, be used in legal proceedings and may be considered as a mitigating or aggravating factor depending on the circumstances.

Criminal record and certificate of conduct

In addition to signing the code, everyone involved as a supervisor at a Bovelander event must inform the Bovelander organisation of any criminal record. We strongly appreciate supervisors providing a certificate of conduct (VOG).

What should you do when the rules are breached?

A supervisor has a duty to set a good example and must act when they witness inappropriate behaviour. We also ask parents and guardians who witness such behaviour to take action.

Possible steps

  • Address the person's behaviour.
  • Report the behaviour to the person in charge of the event.
  • Contact the Bovelander office on 023-5410330 or at jeroen@bovelander.nl.
  • Report the matter to the police, in consultation with the victim, if a criminal offence has been committed.

Confidential adviser

In serious situations, a confidential adviser can advise the victim about possible next steps. At Bovelander this is Jeroen Bovelander, available on 023-5410330 or at jeroen@bovelander.nl.
